My name is Katie Boateng and I am the creator and presenter of the Smell Podcast. I started the podcast in 2018 to provide a space for people with smell disorders to share their stories, after having acquired anosmia myself.
I have followed SmellTaste for a number of years and have interviewed Duncan (and Duncan and Nina) as part of my work, I am delighted to collaborate with SmellTaste to help raise awareness across the world and learn from them to help me develop a patient association in North America.
I live in New Jersey with my husband and enjoy reading, audiobooks, podcasts, watching TV shows, jogging, and the occasional yoga pose.
I am an experienced public speaker, speaking coach, actor, writer and comedian. I also have congenital anosmia. I write speeches, stand up sets, blog posts and self produce entertaining and educational videos about my condition.
I pride myself on having never met a system I can’t hack or a rule I can’t break. I grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico and left “The City Different” as fast as I could – I have been living in Boulder, Colorado ever since. I have a degree from Colorado University, Boulder in Art History with a minor in Italian which hasn’t helped me obtain meaningful employment but at least I am fun to talk to.
This year I embarked on a quest to have the cause of my anosmia confirmed and have it formally recognised as a disability. I did this to achieve my Access Pass which gives me half price entry to our National Parks (which coincided with them closing due to Covid!). I also joined SmellTaste as an Ambassador because they have been a huge source of information and comfort to me.
I wanted to collaborate with them to mutually share our awareness-raising platforms with a wider audience and help to educate about the differences between smell and taste across the world.
